Implantable Magnetite
Magnetite: Is a naturally occurring opaque, black mineral having a high specific gravity, a high heat capacity (ability to retain heat), and magnetic properties, e.g. is attracted to a magnet. Magnetite absorbs visible, UV, IR and X-ray/gamma radiation allowing its use in shielding- and medical applications.
Magnetite is not strongly electrically conductive but behaves more like a semiconductor. Its magnetic properties and its dielectric characteristics make it a very good shielding material for radio waves especially in combination with electrically conductive fillers. Its strong radio wave absorption also makes it a good receptor for converting this radiation into heat and allows compositions containing magnetite to heated by microwave, radio frequency and inductive heating techniques.
Magnetite’s high specific gravity makes it good absorber for vibration and sound which is property used to make automobiles and appliances less noisy.
Magnetite is GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe, under sections 201(s) and 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act)), and can be used in food contact applications. Magnetite is even used as a micro-nutrient and added to soils to improve crop robustness.
